Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro. Via Andrea Solari, 35 - Milano
by Marco Meneguzzo
Five years after the exhibition on Italian sculpture of the twentieth century which inaugurated the new headquarters of the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation in Milan, the spaces in via Solari 35 will host, from October 19, 2010 to February 20, 2011, an exhibition that traces an initial balance of the latest Italian trends in the field of plastic disciplines. Curated by Marco Meneguzzo, Italian sculpture of the 21st century - such is the ambitious title of the initiative - will present the works of 80 artists, all born in the second half of the last century, from the now historicized Nunzio and Dessì, to the exponents of the most generations recent ones, such as Cattelan, Bartolini, Dynys, Arienti, Moro, Beecroft, to even younger ones, with Cecchini, Sissi, Demetz, Cuoghi, up to the very latest such as Sassolino, Simeti, Previdi, Gennari.
The exhibition, which is in line with ideal continuity with that of September 2005, will testify to the most diverse expressions of what could be configured as "the new trend of sculpture", today the most difficult discipline to define: the languages have definitively hybridized, traditional codes have been rapidly abandoned in the last thirty years, and what was the most "certain" artistic discipline in the definitions has become the most uncertain. Attempt a new definition? Accept everything indiscriminately? To dissolve sculpture in so-called "installations" or even in architecture? This is the challenge launched with this exhibition by the Foundation, which in its first five years of activity was characterized precisely by the work of dissemination and international research on sculpture, in its historical but also more contemporary meanings.
This is the programmatic line into which the event fits, with the critical, scientific and historical intent of supporting Italian artistic production, making it known internationally, with artists belonging to the most diverse trends, without preclusions except those of quality and the curriculum of each artist, even if very young. The exhibition will be accompanied by a bilingual catalog - Italian and English - published by the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation.
